******** ‘Athlete of the Month’ ***********
The coaches have selected one male and one female this month as our first athletes of the month. They are:
***James McBrearty***, a relatively new Robin who has fitted in well, shown a good attitude, always listens carefully and works hard…. and
***Amber Stevens***, who always behaves sensibly, attends regularly and gives 100%
Well done to both of you.
Summer Grand Prix awards
Lots of certificates were given out to those who had completed at least four of the summer grand prix events. The winners of each age category were as follows:
Girls:
Under 9 - Millie Shaw
Under 11 – Harriet Roberts
Under 13 – Hannah Cox
Overall winner Megan Lewis
Boys:
Under 9 – Dominic Brown
Under 11 – Jordan Meakin
Under 13 – (Jt) – Nathan Lewis and Zach Meakin
Under 15 – Matthew Cox
Under 17 – Stephen Watson
Overall – James Collington
The track and field trophies were also awarded to Holly Drake and Stephen Watson.
The Graham Blythe trophy for endeavour was awarded to Ellie Shaw
The Coaches’ special award went to Matthew Cox
Adrian Smith Handicap race 27th September
Quite a crowd gathered to see the end of the adult handicap race and to be ready for the off for the junior race. Our chairman had carefully estimated the times for the 2k course, which was probably the most difficult task of the morning. The plan was that everyone should arrive back together.
Although that didn’t happen, a significant number came in within a very short time span, making accurate recording impossible. However the first three places were clear and taken by Sam Shepherd, Daisy Tyers and Holly Powell. Well done to those three especially to Sam who was awarded our new trophy for the race.
Cross Country Running
School Runs
The first secondary school run took place on 26th September with a good turnout of robins, a huge ditch and a near vertical slope!
Year 7 girls: Hannah Cox took 1st place, with Harriet Roberts in 12th and Lucy Roberts only just outside the top twenty.
Year 7 Boys: Zach Meakin was first Robin home in 6th place with Jake Shaw putting in a strong performance
Junior Girls (yr 8/9) – our best performer was lower age (year 8) Georgia Gartside in 12th place with more excellent running from Ellie Shaw, Abbey Williamson and Holly Drake
Junior Boys – another top ten placing here with Sam Moore coming in 5th place
Intermediate Boys (yr 10/11)- A race of around 4k saw a great performance by Matthew Cox in 20th position, again only in year 10 so running against athletes a year older.
There are still four runs left so anyone year 7 or above can turn out and run for your school. The next race is on 10th October at Groby College.
The first primary school run took place at Western Park on 3rd October but as far as I know there were no Robins taking part!
There are plenty of cross country runs this Autumn – most of which are on a Saturday and therefore do not clash with other sports. If you are interested in running for the club, are eleven (or older) and affiliated to the Robins, then please see Paul ASAP and we may also be able to enter teams.
Saturday 31st October – National Cross Country Relays, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. (Team of three required per age group).
Saturday 9th January – County XC Championships, Wigston.
Saturday 30th January – Midlands XC Champs, - Stafford Common
Saturday 27th February – National XC Champs - Leeds
All of these are individual and team events which anyone can enter.
Winter Grand Prix
These are the provisional dates for the winter grand prix. This year we have taken a mix of the Centurion grand prix, the Derby runner league and other races to make up six out of which you must complete at least four to complete the grand prix.
Of course, you can still run all of the Centurion runs or the Derby runner races, but not all will count for the Robin’s grand Prix:
November 1st 2009 Shepshed 1 mile fun run Hind Leys CC
November 22nd 2009 Derby Runner at Fleckney or Foremark
December 6th 2009 Centurion 2k fun run
January 10th 2010 Derby runner Bagworth Heath
February 13th Ivanhoe Challenge
March 7th 2010 Centurion 2k fun run
We have amended the age groups this year so that they are in school years- (yr 3/4, yr 5/6, yr 7/8, and yr 9 and above). This is because some of the races are different lengths for different age groups. There will therefore be no overall winner, but prizes (cash!) for first, second and third in each age group.
Other dates to note:
29th October 2009 6.30pm -8.00pm – Measham leisure centre. We have Nutritionist Emma Kemp coming to talk to us as part of the England Athletics ‘flying coach’ workshops to give a better understanding of how nutrition impacts on our young Athletes.
31st October 2009 2.30pm -5.30pm Hermitage Leisure centre – under 11 club sportshall competition. If you would like to be considered for our team and are year 6 or below, but aged 9 by 15th November (The regional competition date) please see Ivan ASAP.
28th November 2009 – the leisure centre is unavailable so we have again booked the Hipac at Loughborough from 9.00am.
